The prject award was to support the creation and live performances of a multimedia work inspired by Buddhist canonical texts and elements of contemporary symphonic, chamber, rock, electronic and ethnic music. Batagov, in collaboration with US filmmaker Alla Kovgan, integrated recordings of chanting by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Lamas who live and teach in the Buddhist regions of Russia.

The project award was to support the creation of a collaborative electronic musical piece based on ancient Lithuanian polyphonic music known as Sutartines. The piece was created with Washington D.C. area musicians and was performed live for the Sonic Circuits Festival.

The project award was to support curatorial preparation for an exhibition of Jozef Robakowski’s work at Ludlow 38 Gallery and research for an exhibition in Poland focusing on Frank Stella’s series of paintings and reliefs of Polish wooden synagogues.

The project award was to support the translation of Under Control with Erik Ehn at Brown University and a staged reading of the play at The Lark Play Development Center. Belarus Free Theatre members Natalia Koliada and Nikolai Khalezin also delivered presentations at the Theatre Without Borders conference Acting on the World Stage: Theatre and Peacebuilding in Conflict Zones at La MaMa, E.T.C. in New York.

The project award was to support the creation of Ask the Dictators, a critique of contemporary politics that incorporated video representations of eight of the most infamous dictators of the 20th century culled from the libraries of UCLA’s film school, University of Southern California, and the University of California, Irvine.

To support the creation of a site-specific performance with members of Liquid Theatre Company and US dancers at Storefront for Art & Architecture about 1920’s Russia and the poetry of Vladimir Mayakovsky. The performance raised issues surrounding the force and fragility of revolution and love.

Heavily influenced by working with Meredith Monk in 2006, Sofrenović merges classical dramatic performance with vocal and filmic exploration. She is an internationally recognized film and theater actress as well as an accomplished director and vocalist. While in the U.S. it was her goal to forge connections between performance artists and directors in the US and Serbia and attend workshops, lectures and performances that explore interdisciplinary performing arts practices.

Ventzislavova, working in the fields of film/video, photography, installation art, and new media, deals with issues of identity, migration and tourism, the marginalization of individuals and social groups and the adjustment of national borders. She has studied in Vienna, Rome and London and has shown her work in festivals and exhibitions throughout Europe and Russia. She hoped to further her examination of cultural diversity and migration by meeting with American artists and curators and participating in discussions and workshops during her residency.
