Sergey Potemkin was born in 1978. He is a graduate of the St. Petersburg State University of Cinema and Television in the workshop of Yuli Dvorkin. In 1999 Potemkin completed his apprenticeship at Krzysztof Zanussi’s TOR studio in Warsaw. He has also worked as a journalist, film director and cameraman in St. Petersburg. Currently Potemkin teaches Television Journalism at his alma mater and works on documentaries and full length films.

Potemkin’s graduate project, the short film The Machine is Here (Mashina prishla) (2001), was presented at film festivals in Karlovy Vary, Clermont-Ferrand, Moscow, and Mannheim-Heidelberg. His first full-length fiction film, Sunless City (Gorod bez solntsa), premiered at Karlovy Vary and was featured in Bradford, Milan, Galway, Sofia, Shanghai, Calcutta, and others. The film received the Critics’ Choice Award at Moscow International Film Festival.
