Ilya Kazankov, an actor and director, was born in St. Petersburg in 1980. He received his first degree from the Dzherzhinsky Higher Institute of Naval Engineering. After working odd jobs for two years, he enrolled in the Actors Studio at the St. Petersburg Academy of Theatre Arts. He graduated in 2003 and moved to Moscow the following year to study film directing at the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography (VGIK). Kazankov has directed three short films, including Mom (2009), which was part of the program of the 2009 Vilnius Film Shorts international festival. He also directed the play Lord, Send Me a Second One, based on the works of Vladimir Vysotsky, which premiered at the Taganka Theater in Moscow in January 2008, and continues to run at the Vysotsky Center to this day.
