2008 ARTSLINK PROJECTS AWARDEES

AMERICAN DANCE FESTIVAL, DURHAM, NC
Host Country: Russia 
$4,750 to support the travel of ADF faculty member, Ming-Lung Yang, for a two-week teaching residency in collaboration with Ivan Estegneev of Dialogue Dance in Kostroma as part of the ADF/Russia Linkage program. This program is designed to nurture the development of modern dance in Russia and to train potential teachers.

KINODANCE, SOMERVILLE, MA
Host Country: Armenia 
$7,500 to support Alla Kovgan and Alissa Cardone of Kinodance, in collaboration with Melikset Karapetyan of the Armenian group ART-FILM, to conduct a series of artistic exchanges between choreographers and filmmakers. A DVD will be produced featuring completed projects from their 13-day Choreography for the Camera workshop in Yerevan.

SCHOOL OF HARD KNOCKS, NEW YORK, NYFlipFest logo
Host Country: Romania 
$8,500 to support a series of workshops and performances of A Page Out of Order at the Bucharest National Dance Center and Sibiu International Theatre Festival. This production is a result of School of Hard Knocks’ collaboration with the National Dance Center in 2007.

CHARMING HOSTESS, SAN FRANCISCO, CA
Host Country: Uzbekistan 
$8,700 to support The Bowls Project, a collaboration between Charming Hostess and sozanda singer, Muna Nissimova, to create an original song cycle connecting women’s amulet inscriptions to ancient Uzbek wedding poetry. Performances and workshops will be presented at the International Museum of Peace and Solidarity in Samarkand.

ANNE LEBARON, VALENCIA, CA
Host Country: Kazakhstan 
$8,300 to support the creation of The Silent Steppe Cantata, a large-scale sonic portrait of the Republic of Kazakhstan featuring Kazakh tenor, Timur Bekbosunov; the Koktem Children’s Choir; and Orchestra Otyrar Sazy; along with Peruvian filmmaker, Sandra Powers. The piece will premiere in Almaty in 2009 and will also be performed at the Palace of Peace in Astana.

MA-YI THEATER COMPANY, NEW YORK, NY
Host Country: Romania 
$8,500 to support the production of The Romance of Magno Rubio, to be performed at the Odeon Theatre in Bucharest and at the Sibiu International Theatre Festival. Ma-Yi Theater’s artists, focusing on their playwriting and rehearsal processes, will conduct workshops and discussion sessions with Romanian theater artists.

NATURE THEATER OF OKLAHOMA, NEW YORK, NY
Host Country: Croatia 
$8,500 to support the presentation of Nature Theater of Oklahoma’s No Dice, at the Eurokaz Festival as well as their participation in an artists-in-residence program at Lazareti Space in Dubrovnik. Workshops and discussions at the Academy of Drama in Zagreb will accompany their performances.

THE WOOSTER GROUP, NEW YORK, NY
Host Country: Croatia 
$8,500 to support travel of The Wooster Group to Zagreb, where they will perform Poor Theater at the Eurokaz Festival. The Group hopes that their involvement in Eurokaz will enable them to invite international artists to perform at the Baryshnikov Art Center in New York City, where the Group will be a resident company beginning in 2009.

To support travel expenses to attend The Fence European Translation Network meeting in Timisoara and to foster an exchange with Alina Nelega of the DramaFest Foundation in preparation for the hotINK International Festival of Play Readings directed by Coray in New York City.
