2006 ARTSLINK PROJECTS AWARDEES

AMERICAN DANCE FESTIVAL, DURHAM, NC
Host Country: Mongolia 
$6,000 to support a teaching residency for ADF faculty member Douglas Nielsen at the Arabesque Contemporary Dance Center in Ulaanbaatar. Classes for teachers, dancers and choreographers will focus on developing contemporary technique and choreography while respecting Mongolian traditions and individual creative strengths.

EIKO & KOMA, NEW YORK, NY
Host Country: Hungary 
$10,000 to support movement workshops, presentations of past work, and the creation of several ritual performances at the Art Festival of Pannonhalma.

ALLYSON GREEN, SAN DIEGO, CA
Host Country: Latvia 
$7,500 to support a teaching residency with Olga Zitluhina Dance Company and the Latvian Professional Contemporary Choreographers Association during the Time to Dance Festival in Riga and Jurmala. Ms. Green will teach classes in contemporary technique and improvisation, lead a workshop on pedagogy and critical theory for teachers, view work for performance in the US, and create a new site-specific piece with the Latvian company.

SCOTT WELLS, SAN FRANCISCO, CA
Host Country: Croatia 
$5,000 to support a dance and choreographic collaboration with Croatian dancer Sonia Pregrad, and to hold open classes with the Maksimir Center for Culture and Information in Zagreb.

NANCY AGABIAN, BROOKLYN, NY
Host Country: Armenia 
$5,000 to support a sixteen-week program of English-language creative writing workshops with Utopiana, a Yerevan arts organization. Results from the workshop will be published on-line and presented in a public reading.

ANTE MAGAZINE, BROOKLYN, NY
Host Country: Russia 
$9,000 to support travel by editors Nicholas Herman and Dmitri Siegel to Moscow and St. Petersburg to meet with Igor Foronov and other Russian writers and thinkers to gather material for publication in Issue 6 of the magazine. The issue will be devoted to writing on the subject of translation and will be available –in both Russian and English—in print and on-line formats.

UGLY DUCKLING PRESSE, BROOKLYN, NY
Host Country: Russia 
$8,750 to support travel by four Ugly Duckling Presse poet/editors to Russia to work with Russian poets Dmitry Golynko, Elena Fanailova, and Aleksandr Skidan on the translation and design of their soon-to-be-published bilingual books. Both the Russian and the US poets will hold public readings and a round-table discussion on contemporary poetry, translation, and independent publishing.

LAURA KAMINSKY, BRONX, NY
Host Country: Armenia 
$4,250 to support the composition of a new work for Armenian pianist Artur Avanesov and the organization of three concerts of works by contemporary American and Armenian composers. The Komitas State Conservatory in Yerevan will host the concerts as well as lectures on contemporary trends in music where scores and recordings will be made available to the public.

LAMPO, CHICAGO, IL
Host Country: Russia 
$7,000 to support Sound Exchange, a tour by Andrew Fenchel together with musicians Jessica Rylan, Kevin Drumm, and Joe Colley to Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Yaroslavl to collaborate with Russian colleagues in a series of performances, discussions and workshops. In Moscow the group will perform at Dom Cultural Center and gain access to the unique ANS synthesizer at the Theremin Center of the Moscow State Conservatory.

SHARON MARTIN and THE NEW ORLEANS ALL-STAR JAZZ BAND, NEW ORLEANS, LA
Host Country: Georgia 
$10,000 to support the group’s participation in New Orleans Days in Georgia, a festival of music and other New Orleans cultural activities, in association with the Georgian Association of Professional Musicians.

LA MAMA, NEW YORK, NY
Host Country: Albania 
$8,000 to support the creation of a new mulit-media theater piece based on the life of Asclepius, the Greek god of healing, to be presented in Tirana and at the archaeological ruins at the International Theater Festival in Butrini. Ellen Stewart will direct the play and Theodora Skipitares will design the puppets, which will be created in a workshop with local puppeteers. Michael Sirotta, Benjamin Marcantonio, and Yukio Tsuji will arrange and perform the music for the piece along with Albanian musicians.

YARA ARTS GROUP, NEW YORK, NY
Host Country: Kyrgyzstan 
$10,000 to support a series of theater and dance workshops with the Sakhna Theatre in Bishkek and the collaborative creation of a new piece titled Janyl Myrza based on the Kyrgyz Manas epic.
